Compositionally graded SS316 to C300 Maraging steel using additive manufacturing

Joining of dissimilar metals is required for numerous applications in industries such as chemical, energy and automotive. It challenging due to differences melting point, density, thermal expansion the being joined. Common welding techniques involve limiting solidification a narrow area leading high stresses potentially brittle intermetallic phases. Furthermore, geometric complexity these welded joints can be rather limited. Additive Manufacturing (AM) presents new joining metals. One emerging methods building functionally graded parts using Directed Energy Deposition (DED) spatially vary composition. In this paper, SS316L C300 maraging steel couple were joined by DED heat treated. 13 discrete composition layers selected metallurgical considerations, order ensure smooth transition properties microstructure. The mechanical as-built found similar SS part no phases interface.
